Electronic Scrap Overview 2012

March 02, 2013 Corey Niland Blog

The Electronics Recycling Industry has shown tremendous growth in the U.S. and is becoming a maturing segment of the scrap industry. In 2012 the electronics recycling industry generated $5 billion dollars in revenue (up from less than $1 billion in 2002). In addition, electronic recycling companies like Tech Reworks employed more than 30,000 full-time employees in 2012.

The U.S. electronics recycling industry processed over 3 million tons of used and/or end-of-life electronics equipment. The equipment collected is then processed into commodity grade scrap that includes scrap steel, aluminum, copper, lead, circuit boards, plastics and glass. Electronics Recyclers such as Tech Reworks also repair, refurbish and resell functioning electronics equipment as used products.

Electronics recycling is a much needed service that boosts the U.S. economy, creates jobs, sustains natural resources, conserves energy and reduces greenhouse emissions. We are looking forward to seeing substantial growth over the next 10 to 15 years in the electronics scrap segment of the scrap industry.
